Sahara Jane

Sahara Jane is a multi-faceted musician blending influences from Afghan, Indian, and Canadian musical styles in a unique and uplifting way. She is a vocalist, composer and sarangi player. In their new show and upcoming album, Something Good, Sahara Jane and rhythm master Ken Shorley create a new soundscape of global electro-acoustic fusion.

Growing up with musical parents from both Afghanistan and Canada exposed Sahara Jane to a wide range of sounds and influences which have shaped her musical life. She toured Canada extensively in the early 2000s playing clubs and festivals with her sister Kamila Nasr. After honing her skills in the Canadian music scene, from the pubs of St. John’s to the folk clubs of Vancouver Island, Sahara Jane headed for India and became deeply immersed in Indian and Afghan classical music. She began her studies with sarangi maestro Ustad Sultan Khan in Mumbai in 2006, and later learned from master musicians Pandit Dhruba Ghosh, and Vidushi Tulika Ghosh in Mumbai, as well as musical mentor Joep Bor in Amsterdam. In 2010 she rejoined her sister in China where she worked as a jazz singer in the Beijing scene. During that time she had the opportunity to play with jazz musicians from all over Europe and China. Sahara Jane continues to perform and connect with music scenes in India, China, Europe and Canada. She is often invited to be a panelist and guest lecturer to share her unique perspective and understanding of musical styles and cultures.

Her 2019 release, Between Worlds, is a fusion of Eastern and Western influences tied together with carefully crafted lyrics and deeply felt grooves. Between Worlds was very well received and has been played extensively on CBC radio.

Sahara Jane also plays with ASHK World Music Ensemble, OMBAK Gamelan Ensemble, and her improv quartet, Quilting, which was recently nominated for an East Coast Music Award on their debut self-titled release on the Telephone Explosion record label.

Indigenous SPACE ROCK!!

Year of the Crow is a Los Angeles based band formed in 2022. Inspired by Edgar's upbringing in South Central LA and Indigenous heritage, Hernandez’s pool of influence includes that of Jimi Hendrix and Joy Division alongside MLK and the Zapatistas. YOTC is uniquely defined by lyrics that reinforce a message of resistance, freedom and unity joined with an “indigenous space rock” sound that amplifies the heart and soul of the hood.

This show would coincide with the release of his new album and will be a part of a greater West Coast tour. When Edgar is not playing with Year of the Crow he plays with Cree/Salish musician Tia Wood in their duo. Last summer they played a sold out show at Fulford town hall and recorded songs with Daryl Chonka for their highly anticipated debut album with Sony Canada. That being said, he fell in love with the island and is looking forward to coming back and playing Mateada on May 4th.

Pender’s Sarah Smith brings the band over to the “big(ger)” island!

Music will always be essential to the makeup and mode of expression for Canadian singer/songwriter Sarah Smith. It is the language she uses to spread joy, to affirm and to inspire. Renowned for the passion she brings to each live show, to each recording session, to her writing and indeed her life, Smith is beloved by her fans for the intimacy and authenticity she brings to her craft, and the way each one of them can identify with the way she brings her own truth to every note, every lyric and every interaction.

After a quarter century of being known as a darling of, London, Ontario, and equally as the hardest working roots/rocker in Canada, Smith made some dramatic, but ultimately soul-restoring changes to her life involving a change in locale, and a shift in the way she approaches life.

The experience of the COVID-19 pandemic brought with it the time to reflect on her life and career. The outcome of these deep ruminations was a decision to seek solace, peace and spiritual revival. The choice led her to make the journey to the westernmost part of the continent, setting up a new homestead nestled in the lush greenery of British Columbia’s Pender Island. Smith has since come to revel in the quietness of the tall trees, the sea breezes and the majesty of pure nature. It has restored her entirely – mind, body and spirit. And those who love her words, music and shows are the beneficiaries of this revival.

C.R. Avery + Marin Patenaude

  • 150 Fulford-Ganges Road Ganges, BC, V8K 2T8 Canada (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Two musician-poets join forces for an unforgettable evening of song, story, rocking, poetry and moments of BOOM.

C.R. Avery is a unique, raw and dynamic performer. His genius lies in many genres - blues, hip-hop, spoken word and rock & roll. From musical beginnings in his late teens, he has recorded over fifteen albums as well as writing & directing six hip-hop operas, which were mounted and performed from New York's Bowery to L.A.'s South Central. He has toured throughout Canada, the US and Europe (headlining or opening for Billy Bragg, Buck 65, and Leonard Cohen) and garnered the attention of music peers the likes of Tom Waits, blues harp trail blazer Charlie Musselwhite and folk legend Utah Phillip.

Marin was taught to appreciate the things in life built with your own hands and heart, and she has created a body of work that is exquisitely her own. Releasing her first album The Follow Through in 2016, Marin continues to reveal an indomitable and independent spirit, yet a heart vulnerable to deep desire for the intimacy of love and romance. Her second release Sight Unseen can be found among the precious but few to sign to Dallas Green’s (City and Colour) label Still Records. Distributed by Dine Alone Records (Toronto), her most recent album Sex & Dying hit the shelves early 2023.

In the small town of Horsefly BC, she was raised on harmony and sawdust in a family band of Folk and Country. She’s an accomplished piano player and plays an old guitar like a long lost lover and can find the harmony in everything. Marin works within the music industry from many angles. She has been Artistic Director and Production Manager for the festival Arts on the Fly for 12 years, has booked tours in Europe and across Canada, and is a regular session harmony singer for recording bands in Vancouver.

We are stoked to have Under The Rocks return to Mateada’s stage!

Hailing from Kelowna, Canada, Under the Rocks has emerged from a city with no other bluegrass acts to become one of Canada’s premier bluegrass bands. Featuring acoustic guitar (Jordan Klassen), fiddle (Chloe Davidson), banjo and mandolin (Chris Baxter), and upright bass (Nils Loewen) the band makes a big sound that tips its cap to tradition while incorporating singer-songwriter music intentionally put together with clever, inventive song arrangements, emotive instrumental breaks and powerful vocal harmony. Their shows commonly feature dancing, laughter, joyful hoots and hollers and serene moments accompanied by tears and tranquil sighs of release or appreciation. They are a heartfelt, talented string quartet that blends uplifting energy with a reflective reverence for the difficulties of reality that marries joy and sorrow and declares “YES”. Yes to all that it means to be alive on this planet, here and now.

Ryan McMahon likes to tell people he’s a late bloomer. But when looking at the body of work the 43-year-old from Ladysmith, British Columbia has amassed since 2006, he certainly has made up for lost time. With six releases under his name and two with his side project Lion Bear Fox, Ryan has established himself as one of western Canada’s most prolific singer/songwriters, leading to multiple Vancouver Island Music Awards and supporting slots for Burton Cummings, Tom Cochrane, Mother Mother, Lee Harvey Osmond and others.

The latest addition to Ryan’s catalogue is Live Now, his first album since 2019’s In Line For A Smile, and a collection he has been eager to share since the pandemic forced him to pause all musical activity. The creation of Live Now began in early 2022 with the recording of “One More Fire,” arranged through the help of Juno-nominated country artist Aaron Pritchett.

Ryan explains, “Although we have stylistically sonic differences, Aaron’s been a great friend to me and my music since we connected at a charity event a few years back. We tracked One More Fire as a stand-alone single at Vancouver’s Warehouse studio, with Aaron’s son Jordan and his fiancée Danielle handling production, along with engineer Sheldon Zaharko [Steve Dawson, Matt Anderson, Billy Talent]. We all found working together so organic and enjoyable that we decided to build an album around that first session.”

With millions of streams and hundreds of international shows between them, Zoe Sky Jordan, Michaela Slinger, and Lucy Clearwater decided to plan a tour that prioritized listener connection above all else. The three have orbited each other in Los Angeles as friends and collaborators for years, with their various artist projects leaning pop, folk, indie, and alternative with firm roots in the singer-songwriter tradition. SKY SLINGER CLEARWATER is a week-long collection of shows across British Columbia in unlikely places—house shows, vintage stores, restaurants—formatted as Nashville-style writers' rounds. It's like the seventies, but with the internet!

Canadian born, LA-based alternative singer-songwriter Sky Jordan is known for her comedic storytelling and incisive lyrics. Her music has been featured on dozens of shows such as Riverdale, Lost Girl, and Switched at Birth and she recently signed a publishing deal with Daytripper Music. Slinger spends her time between LA, Nashville, and Vancouver writing and collaborating with award-winning artists like Ryan Stewart (Carly Rae Jepsen) and Khalid Yassein (Wild Rivers). In 2023, she was selected to open for Dermot Kennedy and Donovan Woods in support of her full length "This Can't Last Forever" (604 Records). Clearwater is a staple in the LA singer-songwriter scene, frequently selling out iconic Hollywood venues like The Hotel Cafe and Bardot. She has produced and released records in both English and German, and will be finishing a European tour and a West Coast run supporting Victoria Canal before SSC in April.

Duff Thompson & Steph Green - Lore Of The Shadow People Tour

  • 150 Fulford-Ganges Road Ganges, BC, V8K 2T8 Canada (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Duff Thompson & Steph Green stop in <3

Garage rock, country, folk, indie vibes from two intertwined artists as part of an impressively intricate tour.

Duff Thompson is a songwriter, musician, and producer whose music is a swampy blend of folk, pop, and garage rock. As a songwriter, he has a rare ability to distill emotional complexity into simple, sincere songs that instantly hit the listener on a visceral level. As a producer, he draws from influences that span across decades and genres, merging them into a cohesive and organic sound recognizable as his own.

Thompson’s dark, alienated, and swaggering sophomore release, Shadow People, is the first of a duology of albums recorded during a late summer Montreal heatwave in 2021. Created over two weeks of intensive recording, Shadow People comprises 10 of the 20 tracks captured during these sessions. Thompson rented out the studio space at Sud-Ouest Recording Service and produced and engineered the album himself, bringing along with him a 16-track reel-to-reel and songwriter/musicians Steph Green and Kyle Taylor as his

backing band and assistant engineers. The album also features contributions from Mat Davidson (Twain) on strings, pedal steel, and bass clarinet. Whereas Thompson’s 2020 debut album, Haywire showcased his versatility and folk influences, Shadow People is a more cohesive collection of songs that push his music further into the world of garage and indie rock. Shadow People is out October 27th on Mashed Potato Records.

Thompson started out playing music at a young age, forming and playing in bands until 2016, when he shifted focus to being a solo artist. It was around this time he found himself in New Orleans where he would spend the next few years recording both himself and those around him in the folk/songwriter community he found himself in. It was also around this time that he co-founded Mashed Potato Records, which he continues to co-run with Steph Green in Canada.

Steph Green's music is for those who fancy the art of songwriting, depicting a lonely world illuminated by strangeness and beauty. Her sophomore album, "Lore", is a series of vignettes that immerse the listener in dreams and nightmares of the West. It's a world of towering storm clouds, flooding rivers, and diamond skies. The natural and supernatural collide, wailing spirits wander lost highways, and shapeshifting starling murmurations soar overhead of restless loners.

Green produced and recorded "Lore" at home on a 16-track reel-to-reel, creating a distinctive and otherworldly sound with weeping steel guitar, washy organ, and ghostly vocal layering reverberating from a distant dimension. Embarking on an almost entirely solo recording process that allowed room for experimentation, Green also enlisted long-time collaborator Duff Thompson as the rhythm section on bass and drums. Out now on Mashed Potato Records, "Lore" is a rugged, eerie, and wild homage to both a real and imagined place.

Green brought the same DIY ethos and spirit of experimentation that characterizes "Lore" to her previous releases, all of which were also recorded analog and variously featured her in the roles of producer and multi-instrumentalist. Her debut album "Thanks for That" and second EP, "Spooky Love" were recorded mostly live in makeshift home studios while living in New Orleans, with both releases taking influence from a combination of garage, indie rock/pop and country music. Her first release and venture into writing and recording was the cassette 4-track EP, "Salt Spring Island Tapes", created alone in a seaside barn in British Columbia, following years of traveling and performing as a street musician. In addition to her own project, Green has also performed as a backing musician and vocalist for numerous songwriters over the years, appearing most recently on recordings for Duff Thompson and Dean Johnson. Following an extensive era of collaboration in New Orleans, "Lore" finds Green returning to her roots in Canada, multi-tracking her way through the isolated, northern winter.

With an original and exciting approach to acoustic music, the group serves up explosive instrumentals, compelling story-telling and high-powered vocals. As Kelly Nakatsuka (Islands Folk Festival, CBC host) describes "The Unfaithful Servants are one of the most exciting bands from Vancouver Island in some time...gorgeous harmonies and fine song writing, beautiful instrumental interplay and some seriously rippin' solos."   With critically acclaimed performances under their belt (Vancouver Island MusicFest, Salmon Arm Roots & Blues, The Islands Folk Festival) their debut album continues to build upon that buzz.

American born mandolinist Jesse Cobb could be described as a virtuoso on his instrument.  He is a founding member of the critically acclaimed bluegrass group The Infamous String Dusters and with that group he received a Grammy nomination for one of his original compositions.  Jesse has recorded and performed with Bela Fleck, Lee Anne Womack, Dirks Bentley, Jim Lauderdale, John Cowan and many others. He’s held a residency at the historic stage of The Grand Ole Opry and has toured the world. His exceptional talent is widely recognized in the bluegrass world and he is an innovator of the instrument.

Dylan Stone has warmed up stages for the likes of Keith Urban, EVERLAST and Alejandro Escovedo. An interesting and storied career has led him to perform with musical heavies including Robert Randolf and Colin James. An honest musician who plays and sings from the heart, Dylan is a restless songwriter who is constantly pursuing new songs, sounds and collaborations.

Since the group was founded in 2017, The Unfaithful Servants have been continuously pushing forward the limits of traditional music and consistently delivering exciting & engaging performances.

POET PROVOCATEUR

"AN IRON FIST IN A SLOWLY-REMOVED VELVET GLOVE."--MOONEY ON THEATRE

Janice Jo Lee is a dynamic artist. She is a second generation Korean-Canadian settler based in Tkaronto (Toronto), Ontario. She is a folk-soul-jazz singer songwriter, composer-sound designer, spoken word poet, theatre maker, and arts and anti-oppression facilitator.

Lee’s artwork has always been one with her activism. Her songs, poems and plays are immersed in issues of gender empowerment, community, climate change, the environment and antiracism. On stage she performs spoken word pieces and songs built on layers of cascading harmonies. With her guitar, looping pedal, trumpet, Korean janggu drum, disarmingly funny candour and poetically-rich lyrics, Lee commands the stage. She conjures warm energy, asks questions about our times, and leaves audiences rejuvenated and aglow.

Born in Toronto to a Korean immigrant family, she grew up riding bikes, singing in choir, and preferred soccer to her piano lessons. By the time she graduated from Wilfrid Laurier University with a major in English Literature and minor in Political Science, she was a songwriter performing locally with The Radical Choir. It was in this collective that Lee began her early practice as a folk musician - leading sing-alongs, composing songs inspired by local issues, and performing in community.

In the first ten years of her career in Kitchener-Waterloo she steered the emergence of its next generation of spoken word poets as the director of the KW Poetry Slam. As a folk music producer, she cultivated the local scene as a series curator and programmer. As an outspoken activist and organizer she brought forward uncomfortable conversations around racism and white supremacy in the local social justice culture and queer community. More at the official bio !

Supporting the show is the awesome Richard Garvey. 7pm. $10 Advance, $15 Door!

Marley Daemon Iredale

Marley Daemon Iredale is a singer, multi-instrumentalist and composer from Salt Spring Island. Jazz and classical-trained, she brings both high artistry and a courageous intimacy to her music. With strikingly honest lyrics and musical flavours ranging from soulful R&B to contemporary art-folk, Marley's music is about revolution – spiritual, social and environmental. Her songs call us home to ourselves, drawing us into connection with the natural world and the freedom that is available in every moment. As we experience a planetary shift (in ‘climate’ – both inner and outer), many of us grapple more urgently with questions surrounding human identity, our relationship to nature, and what it means to live an authentic life. Sung with emotional and haunting melodies, Marley’s songs offer us insight into the human condition, speaking to the most modern concerns of our personal and planetary predicament while retaining a timeless beauty.

Beyond her musical talents, Marley wears many hats – a devoted mother, a song leader for the Calliope Women's Choir, a music teacher, a meditation instructor, as well as a student and teacher of sacred clown. Her journey, both on and off the stage, is a testament to her multifaceted artistry.

After years of touring with indie-folk ensembles Dirty Grace, The Honey Tongues, and her duo Irth, Marley, alongside her music and life partner, Jesse Thom, decided to pause their adventures to grow and nurture their two young children. Now, after a transformative three-year hiatus in "mama land," Marley Daemon Iredale is returning to the stage.

On November 11th, at Mateada, Marley will enchant her audience with two captivating solo sets. She will unveil fresh material, performed on her hypnotic Rhodes keyboard, promising a nourishing evening filled with heart-stirring folk and hip-swaying soul/jazz, all while enjoying the cozy vibes and decadent delights of Mateada. This is an experience that promises to captivate your soul, nourish your body and move your spirit.

TARRAN THE TAILOR +++

His legendary Live performances have been delighting, confounding and seducing audiences across the world for more years than he would care to admit. He’s played such exotic locales as the side stage at Raves, in Manitoba, and on a mountaintop in Bulgaria.

His live show is a subtle barrage of dreamy vocals, found sound, and strange trips through the music of the world, wrapped in whipped cream and spice.

His music was turned into a soundtrack for a sold out theatre show, L.I.A.R in Europe and Australia which he toured with many years.

His music has been in the short film Bury him in the Desert, the cooking show the Perennial plate, a crazy Swedish fishing documentary, and a number of racy love scenes.   Of course.

“ Psychedelic Folk like a piece of ice down your shirt “- somebody

“ Slow tango after a muddy barn dance " - somebody else

“ Crawling biting whispers”  - somebody else’s friend

Frase is a breathy-voiced soul machine from Montreal / BC. Touring in support of his brand new record “Good Dreams”.

As a multi-instrumentalist, singer, producer, engineer, and DJ, Frase lives and breathes Music. With a buttery voice, heartfelt songwriting, and magnetic stage presence he has built a fan base worldwide for the past decade one show at a time. Just as much at home behind an acoustic guitar and a mic, as he is at the helm of a raving dance floor.

With a high output and numerous collaborations, his catalog highlights the nimble ability to have a soul, a mind, and a really good time all at the same junction. With a unique vocal delivery that marries beautifully to his soul-infused productions (Italian fans were saying he sounds as if Jamiroquai made an Album with Daft Punk). Frase also credits Mac Miller and Anderson.Paak as his modern influences as well as a plethora of Nu-funk and Alt/Hip-Hop sensibilities.

Along for the ride is Fawna, and excellent MC based out of Quebec. FAWNA is the solo project of Canadian singer/songwriter Jenna Deagle-Potter. Rooted in her passion for R&B, Jazz & Electronica, FAWNA reels you in with a refreshing vocal soundscape of sultry chill-hop vibes. With two EP’s and several releases under her belt, she continues to make her mark creating music and touring across Canada.

And… Kola! rounding out this triple bill - a Producer & Recording Artist also from Montreal.
